THE VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE DIMENSIONS OF SOCIAL LIFE. NARRATIVES OF THE SUFFERING BETWEEN THE CHAMULAS

Abstract

By analysing the constructs of narratives around experiences of suffering between the championships, the meanings of the constituent elements of the interpretative framework of those discussed are explored. It first highlights what I call ‘dialogue with the body’, which gives an account of the combination of various health care options based on the treatment of symptoms and reactions derived from it, often linked to cold/heat duality, but above all to the body’s ability to remain active. Stresses, furthermore, the impact of emotions, either as a trigger for suffering or as an obstacle to restoring health; the relevance of existing social processes is described in this regard. Lastly, it analyses the articulation of ideas relating to punishment, witchcraft and spiritual concepts, which, taken as a whole, tells us of an uncertain and at the same time conflictual and inconsistent view of social life, which modulates local visions of disease and unfortune. ABSTRACT Through an analysis of the narrative constructs around the experiences of suffering among Chamula indigenous people, the author explores the Meanings of the constituent elements of the corresponding interpretive framework. What is outstanding, first of all, is what the authorisation references to as dialogue with the body, Describing a combination of different options for health care, based on the treatment of symptoms and actions to treatment, necessarily linked to the cold-warm duality, but specially to the workforce’s capacity for maintaining self-active. True worth are the impacts from Emotions, whether as triggers for one’s suffering, or as obstacles to recovering one’s health. And in this regard, the relevance of current social processes is also described. Lastly, the author describe and analyse the articulation of ideas related to divine punishment, witchcraft and spiritual concepts which together describe a vision that is united as well as conflict and inconsistent with social life, and that that shape the local visions related to sickness and misfortune.
