Gender stories, party stories

Abstract

The study of gender narratives within this type of organisation is also of particular interest due to the under-representation of women in politics. This is a democratic deficit that affects modern political systems as a whole, but which affects Italy with particular gravity and prominence. The issue of women’s political under-representation has so far been addressed mainly in technical/legal terms (equal opportunities policies and positive action), or in political theory (the public-male and private-female dichotomy as the basis for the sexual contract of politics). On the other hand, there is no contribution to the parties as organisations largely responsible for the processes of selecting and promoting political careers, i.e. as places where gender practices and cultures are produced on a daily basis, more or less egalitarian or, conversely, discriminatory. On the basis of this research and reflection vacuum, the aim of this article is to highlight the gender practices and cultures that emerge from the stories of men and women within two partisan organisations, one on the right and one on the left, located in the territorial context of the Province of Trento. The research was carried out by means of a semi-structured interview involving four women and four men, divided by age couples (one man and one young woman and one man and one long-present in the party), which can be compared with regard to the role and position in the relevant party organisations. The analytical focus was on the construction of the gender of the men and women interviewed, understood both as an individual dimension and experience (the gender stories of the individual/s) and as a broader organisational dimension (the gender stories of the organisations, captured by different voices). A further analytical dimension is the intertwining between the most widely understood political culture and the gender culture revealed by the stories of the people interviewed, in an attempt to capture continuity and breakdowns, matches and conflicts between the two sides.
