Sex tourism: his pleasure and dangers

Abstract

Sex tourism is an important sector in the configuration of contemporary travel and has different forms depending on regions and cultures. In addition, it contributes significantly to the transmission of sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS. This article outlines the main challenges linked to these issues and the national and international responses to monitor and manage the development of this form of tourism in the context of globalisation. Some research has thus shown a link between the search for strong sensations and international travel (Mayo and Jarvis, 1981) during which tourists experience a change in their consciousness associated with the contrasts between tourism activities and familiar experiences in the country of origin. The motives for travelling can also be more directly sexual and form part of a growing sex tourism, defined as ‘tourism where the main purpose of motivation is to consume commercial sex’ (Hall, 1992: (64) associated with the various forms of prostitution. The degree of sexual exploitation depends on geographical regions and countries, some of which are genuine ‘pornocracies’ (Manderson, 1992). In the current epidemiological context, as we have seen, tourism contributes significantly to the spread of the virus both in the host countries and in the countries from which travellers come from. In this regard, there seems to be a desire to intervene more directly at the level of the tourism sector itself, in order to introduce measures to inform tourists and nationals of the mechanisms for transmitting ITS and HIV/AIDS, to increase the availability of condoms and syringes, to raise awareness among the populations most directly involved in sex work and to empower them to negotiate protected sexual practices, while at the same time guaranteeing them more decent wages. However, these strategies cannot avoid a critical analysis of tourism in general, its current motivations and objectives in order to develop a project capable of reducing the current economic and socio-cultural imbalance, which is likely to be amplified by poorly conducted trade globalisation.
