The use of music therapy to improve the communication of children with Autista Spectrum Trastorno in Specialised Open Auvets

Abstract

The benefits of music therapy in students with Autista Spectrum Trastorno have been widely demonstrated by the various authors, although we do not have sufficient literature on its use in the Open Aulas Specialised in Ordinary Schools (TEA Aulas). In this regard, the aim of the work was to analyse the improvements brought by music therapy to the development of communication among students with Autista Spectrum Trastorno within the Open Aulas of the CEIPs of Castile-La Mancha and the Autonomous Community of Madrid. To this end, an extensive desk review of reference sources has been carried out and the teachers in charge of the Specialised Open Aulas who use music therapy as a resource in the classroom have been interviewed. The article concludes, firstly, that music therapy is poorly integrated into the TEA classrooms (less than 20 % of schools). In classrooms that do run with music therapy, the benefits of music therapy are reflected in a clear increase in the intention of communication among students. In addition, the planning of activities takes great account of children’s preferences and music history. However, there are factors that prevent the full use of the therapeutic possibilities of music therapy, due in particular to: (a) poor teacher training and (b) inadequate space to implement a music session.
