Management of municipal solid waste in the municipality of São Bentinho-PB – Brazil

Abstract

Inadequate management of solid municipal waste has many impacts on the environment, changing its physical, chemical and biological characteristics. The lack of adequate treatment for solid municipal waste combined with incorrect provision becomes a major aesthetic problem and an alarming threat to public health. Therefore, in order for the proper management of municipal solid waste to be implemented in accordance with existing legislation, mechanisms and strategies for the handling of waste from its source to its environmentally sound disposal are necessary. The aim of this work is to diagnose the current process of managing solid municipal waste in the municipality of São Bentinho-PB and to propose that it be managed more appropriately in the light of local conditions. The diagnostic methodology was based on a bibliographic survey, an interview with the competent body and the application of questionnaires to the population of the municipality. The result of this study showed that the majority of the population needed to be informed about environmental issues in order to exercise their responsibility for managing litter. Municipal public authorities have not taken any measures to minimise the impacts of improper management of their waste, there is a need for incentives and actions to raise public awareness of environmental education.Management of municipal solid waste in the city of São Bentinho-PB – Brazilian Inadequate management of municipal solid waste entails numbered impacts on the environment by changing its physical, chemical and biological characteristics. The diagnostic methodology was based on a literature review, interview with the competent body and the application of questions to municipal population. With the result of this study it was noticeable that most of the population needs to be informed about environmental issues, to exercise their responsibility in managing waste. The municipal government has not taken any steps to minimise impacts related to improper management of their waste, we need incentives and actions for public prosecution on environmental education.
