My memories of Professor María Encarnación Varela

Abstract

They ask me to write a number of lines to remember professor Encarnación Varela. When trying to do so, my mind comes first and foremost by an autumn morning of October 1969; that of the 7th day, in particular if I am not missed. I had received a few months earlier a call from the hebrew chair holder at the time, Professor David Gonzalo Maeso, to propose that I be given responsibility for the arameo subject in the recently restructured studies of the hebrew branch of semi philology. And that was the day of my presentation to the pupils. In the event, Dr Maeso accompanied me and, in contrast to my, I had a small group of pupils: four girls and one girl, if I do not remember badly. Moreover, a description of that same meeting, with more literary quality than I can show here, but viewed from the other side of the classroom, appeared on the pages of this magazine: it was precisely the work of the person who was the subject of these memories, the teacher, at that meeting, Mª Encarnación Varela. On the occasion of my retirement as a university lecturer, the Medical Studies Department intended to devote a number of the hebrew section of miscellaneous Arab and Hebraic Studies, and Professor Mª Encarnación Varela was commissioned to prologit with a small semblanza mía that led that number (MEAH Hebreo, Vol. 49 [2000] pp.). 5-12). I would always like to thank you for the anxiety and the Caribbean breathing these lines. But returning to the vision of that meeting from the school, my own school, I have to remember the feelings that were arousing in me...
