Gender feminicides: The actual evolution of the phenomenon, the suicide of the aggressor and the incidence of media treatment

Abstract

This work analyses three of the issues currently of greatest societal and scientific concern in the field of gender-based violence in general and so-called gender femicides (violent death of women executed by her partner) in particular. A first part is devoted to attempting to assess, beyond what can be seen from a mere examination of the evolution of the number of cases, the analysis, by means of corrective factors that help understand the phenomenon, of the actual evolution of gender femicides over the last decade. Secondly, it is about deepening one of the most striking phenomena; this is the suicide (consumed or tempted) of the perpetrator after killing his partner, which in the latest statistics is already close to one third of the cases. Finally, it is analysed whether the distribution of gender feminicide follows a uniform pattern to check whether the so-called ‘imitation or calling effect’ can be occurring; this means that some subjects execute or accelerate the execution of a gender femicide by becoming aware from the media that others, in a situation similar to their own, have done so.
