Violence against women in the media. A study in the information provided by TVE.

Abstract

This work presents the results obtained from the analysis of 55 reports of violence against women, selected from all the reports broadcast in the first half of 2005 in the news reports of the two Spanish public television channels. Applying the Content Analysis technique, it is hattered on a twofold basis: on the one hand, the structure of the news and, on the other hand, the content of the news. With regard to the first classification, we found three types of news: (a) occurrences, (b) measures against violent events and expert analysis of these facts and (c) reports, i.e. more generic and broader treatment. With regard to the analysis of the content, we have developed a categorisation system in which the following categories have been listed: the wording and description of the violent act, the victim, the aggressor, the type of relationship they had in the perpetrator and victim, the protests and solidarity actions, the mention of the number of victims so far this year, and a final category, referring to the analysis of the news by experts.
