PERFORMANCES AND INDICATORS IN THE EXAMINATION: GREAT GATSBY (2013) EXAMPLE

Abstract

Cinema and literature are two branches of art that have been in serious cooperation for the last 120 years. Many other countries' cinemas, particularly the Hollywood film industry, have filmed various best-selling or literary novels-books. Some novels can also provide socio-economic and cultural data while depicting the period they dealt with, although they are based on fiction. The great Gatsby, which deals with the America of the 1920s, was written by F.Scott Fitzgerald and published in 1925. In his own real life, the novel in question by the life of the main character Jay Gatsby, in question, became a classic work in time. The novel was adapted for the first time in the 1970s. The second film by the same name is a 2013 film produced and directed by Baz Luhrmann. The film covered by the study contains some visual and auditory differences, although it is loyal to the book. The film, which is well exploited by modern-day effects technology, is successfully visualised the brilliance and insanity of the period. Dance and music from the period are particularly highlighted in the film, while some up-to-date songs are included. Costumes and hair styles are also featured in reflecting the weather of the period. In addition, indicators such as the green light, valley of Ashes, and the advertisement sign by Dr. T.J. Eckleburg, highlighted in the novel, correspond to the notions related to the vision, incompatibility, class difference and society observed. As a result, Gatsby is a film that is generally loyal to the novel it is adapted to, but includes new, up-to-date or postmodern approaches, with style and content stylised and magnificent.
