Archaeological investigations in the upper basin of Arroyo Tapalque: A human occupation model for the centre of the Pampa Húmeda sub-region during the late Archaeological research in the upper basin of Arroyo Tapalque: model of human violence for the center of the Pampa Húmeda sub-region during the late Holocene

Abstract

This work summarises the archaeological evidence generated for the sites located in the various environments in the upper basin of the Tapalque stream. A human occupancy model for the basin is discussed during the late Holocene (3500-500 years AP), focusing on strategies for exploitation of fish resources, technological organisation and patterns of mobility, settlement and use of space. The results achieved in this project are consistent with the evidence recorded for other areas of the Pampeana region, where there is a collecting component, reduced residential mobility and increased logistical mobility to access specific resources. In terms of subsistence, it was mainly based on the exploitation of guanaco, while for some of the local lytic resources an expeditious technological strategy was used. The emergence of territorial behaviours in the late Holoceno of the region led the groups to intensify inter-group relations to access resources that are not available locally. To sum up, research in the basin increased the evidence available to the centre of the Pampa Húmeda sub-region, making it possible to systematise the information and generate models such as those presented here. In this paper, the Archaeological evidence from sites located in different environments in the upper base of the stream Tapalqué is summarised. The main aim is to discuss a model of human violence for this basin during the late Holocene (3500-500 years BP), emphasising strategies of faunal exploitation, technological organisation, and patterns of mobility, settlement, and use of space. The results obtained in this project concur with the evidence checked for other areas of the Pampean region, where a collector composing, lower residential mobility and access to specific resources through high logistic mobility are observed. Support was based mainly on guanaco exploitation, and an expedient technological strategy was used for some local resources. The emerging of territorial behaviour in the region during the late Holocene ensured the intensification of intergroup relationships to facilitate access to resources not fully available. In sum, research in this basin adding the evidence available for the center of the Pampa Húmeda sub-region and enabled the systematisation of information and the development of models such as the one submitted here.
