Abstract
The cheeses of southern Peru are food dishes, banquets intended mainly for Pachamama and apus, but also produced mathematical systems governed by sophisticated operations. Using two key numbers, 3 and 4, ritual specialists are able to transmit polysemic messages. The number 3 brings together customers, sites and fixes, in short, ‘people’ capable of interacting with each other. 3 appears on the k’intus of coca leaves and in the orations received during the ofrenda process. On the other hand, point 4 does not indicate relationships but spatial forms: it is a geometric operator unifying the ceremonial servillet (unk’uña), the wrapping paper and the finished package to represent the four directions of the world and make the ofry a miniature world. Thanks to the two numbers, the ritualist can recreate the cosm, enter into agreements with the dioses and define new situations favourable to the lives of its customers.
