Where these data come from
Privacy in the digital society. The public exhibition of young people on the Internet

Abstract

This work sets out how the information society has been spreading attitudes and behaviours more open to public life, which has led some authors to talk about ‘the transparent generation’ or the ‘end of privacy’. The objective is to study the exposure of 14-20 year-olds to privacy through ICT, in particular social media such as Tuenti, and mobile apps such as Whatsapp. To this end, an empirical study has been carried out with a sample of 400 students in the Autonomous Community of La Rioja, with interviews and surveys. The results indicate that young people continue to preserve a space for their private life, but that apps such as social media or photos have been this involved the externalisation of personal data and photographs, the increased density of contacts (now virtual) and the account of everyday moments (leisure, weekends, holidays) on the public or semi-public social media board.
