Social mapping of riparian children and adolescents/kilombales in the Amazon

Abstract

Social mapping, as a technical means, seeks to record reports and socio-spatial representations in the process of self-mapping, as well as identifying situations of conflict in the way the territory is used by traditional communities. Situational maps with riparian and kilombalan children and adolescents presented unique traits between plurality of identities, such as forms of interaction with the environment, family productive activity and struggle for access to education. This process is part of a more general dynamic of life associated with Amazon nature and the difficulties of ensuring the social reproduction of the group. In that case, the territoriality of these groups, in particular, expresses the socio-cultural relationships that are pointed out and redesigned by the children and adolescents themselves in situational maps. In developing this article, we will deal with the social representation of children and adolescents in the paraense municipalities of Abaetetuba, Cametá, Mocajuba, Limoeiro do Ajuru and Igarapé Mirí, all located on the lower Tocantins river, a region affected by the Tucuruí hydro barrier. In making the situational picture, from a technical point of view, four procedural steps were adopted: production of chroquis, georeferencing of socio-cultural elements, graphic adaptation of the chroquis and final production of the map. The use of social mapping by social movements has been reflected in the ability to instrumentalise counter-political arguments, mainly in that they advance the interests of external actors in their traditional territories, as well as adopting the product of social mapping as a document calling for public policies, planning and the basis for self-management of the territory.
