Overview of appearances, exchanges and chamanism among the emblies of Chocó, Colombia

Abstract

Permanence, exchanges and chamanism among the Emera del Chocó de Mauricio Pardo intends to understand the presence of indigenous people in the Colombian Chocó after almost four centuries of contact. This permanence, as the author shows, cannot be explained exclusively by the economic facts or the particularities of the humid rainforest. This book does not cover a company held in time or free of conflict and contradictions. Quite the contrary. It sets out in detail the changes in the turnout, as well as the various reactions of the group to these interventions. At the heart of his argument are the flexible exchanges that have adapted to the new circumstances of that contact (material, symbolic, economic, monetary, ritual, between different ‘worlds’ and between humans and non-human). Bringing these exchanges closer to those exchanges, of which chamanism and the market are important forces, means that books succeed in deepening the complexities of this permanence.
