Abstract
Egypt of the First World War has seen a modest but dynamic left-wing dynamic. A Socialist Party, which quickly turned into a Communist Party, was created and developed close ties with a number of trade unions through its affiliated trade union federation. This radical trend within the Egyptian labour movement has had a limited but significant influence on the movement as a whole. He propagated views of Egyptian society and the identity of the working class that defired those of the Wafd, the left criticising his bourgeois nationalism. The article discusses the complex and ultimately tense relationship between the first communist movement and the Egyptian nationalism embodied by Wafd. In the end, the ECP was to be repressed and the worker movement cleaned the left influences. But the communists’ work had consequences beyond the circles that were in direct contact with him.
