LOCAL EXPERIMENTS IN THE UTOPIA GENERATION OF PEPETELA

Abstract

A recurring image in contemporary metadata, the labirinth invokes its own post-modern experience. The particular characteristics of this structure – fragmentation, discontinuity, multiplicity and infinity – and the feelings associated with labirinical experience – disorientation, uncertainty, distress, ambiguity – remain closely linked to the concept of metafication. The aim of this work is to analyse laboritic images present in the novel The generation of utopia by Angolan writer Pepetela. Considering that the labirinth casts an inherent ambiguity, represented both in the physical structure and in the symbolic field, this work is also intended to present a reflection on labyirintic experience as an allegation of metaficacy. Theories on metafiction and fiction developed by Linda Hutcheon and Vilém Flusser will be articulated to discover some aspects of the metadata literature identified in the novel, such as intertextuality and the multiplicity of ‘verties’. Keywords: Labirinth; Angolana literature; Measurement
