THE MISTREATMENT OF OLDER PERSONS IN THE FAMILY. ALIGNMENT WITH THE SITUATION IN MALAGA (SPAIN)

Abstract

The reality of elder abuse (MPM) continues to remain today with great invisibility, despite being included among the most relevant social, political and professional concerns in recent years. The MPM is defined as a social, complex and collective problem, which occurs both at the social and community level, as well as at institutional and family level. In the latter, this article is the focus of this article, which is close to the main objective of knowing its impact and its evolution through social work professionals in healthcare devices. A descriptive study was carried out on 259 cases detected by the Málaga Health District during the period 2001-2010, as this year 2001 was when the data began to be computerised. The results show characteristics of the MPM that coincide with the related literature, highlighting the profile of the victim, mostly a woman, aged approximately 73, mainly assaulted by a man from his family environment. We conclude on the importance of making progress on prevention and comprehensive action within the MPM, through greater specific training for professionals and the introduction and qualification of coordination protocols between them. The reality of Maltreatment to Elderly People (MEP) remains historically invisible, cleared being included among the most relevant social, political and professional concerns in the test years. The MEP is defined as a complex and collective social problem, which took place in the social-community field as well as in the institutional and family fields. This paper is fostered on the latter, and it is approached with the primary goal of knowing its effects and its evolution as observed through the professionals in sanitary devices in Social Work. A descriptive study about 259 identified cases by the Sanitary District of Málaga during the period 2001-2010 is carried out. Results show characteristics of MEP related to the reference literature, emphasising the profile of the victim, consistently female, approximately 73 years old, and mainly attacked by a man of her family environment. We conclude about the importance of advancing in the prevention and comprehensive action in the presence of MEP, through a specific training of the professionals and the establishment and qualification of tasks of coordination among them.
