Dangerous relationships. An epistolal

Abstract

The title and part of the content of this exchange between two academics is inspired by the epistolar novel Les liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Lachlos, which can be regarded as an exploration of the ironies of the human condition. The exchange of epístoles is between Dr Alberto Golding and Dr Manman Touchstone, names inspired by rent. Golding is good like gold but potentially malleable; Touchstone was used to test the purity of gold or silver and, in figurative form, to check whether something or someone is genuine. Apart from some criticism of the academic system, the fundamental theme of these ephistoles is the anti-feminism of the Middle Ages, referring to some situations of contemporary times. In addition to the letters revealing misoginia, the 14th century poems about Melusina, a female beauty metamorfosered in a snake, are referred to and analysed.
