Abstract

Biotechnology is a sector that acts directly on technological developments in various sectors. Due to the multidisciplinarity of its knowledge base, trust has been seen as one of the vital tools for innovation processes and the development of new products through the high degree of competitiveness between companies and the variety of products launched on a daily basis on the market. Therefore, in-depth discussion is needed to identify potential risks and their influence on the success of the development of new products, providing trustworthy information for decision makers of biotechnology companies acting with innovations and providing for the development of management strategies. The aim of this work is to investigate what are the main risks in the process of developing new products in biotechnology companies; to this end, a systematic literature review was carried out to identify the main risks encountered by biotechnology companies during the product development process. On the basis of the mapping of these indicators, a semi-structured questionnaire has been drawn up and sent to experts in the field in order to assess experts’ priorities for product development. For the selection and allocation of weights, the American Analytic Hierarchy Process was used as a multi-language decision-making tool. The data collected were processed for the hierarchical construction of the risks. As the main results, it was found that the most important risks, according to the expert judgement, were market (24.51 %), followed by human resources (23.51 %) and advantages (16.29 %). The least important finding was production risk (9.99 %), financial risk fourth (13.27 %) and risk of product requirements in fifth (12.47 %).
