Abstract
The historiography of American independence has marked one before and one later in the historical approach to transatlantic relations. Numerous investigations have analysed identity processes and the social breakdown between the former virreinates and the Hispanic monarchy. However, the political conflict experienced was not immediately incorporated into the everyday and popular religiousness of European territories. On the contrary, the sources of the time tell us the devotional and artistic continuity of the cults and images of Indian virgin during the 19th century. However, after emancipation, these artistic works continued to have a special place in Spanish and European temples, beyond the new national identity they acquired in the republics.
