AN EXAMINATION OF METAPHORS REGARDING THE CONCEPT OF “NATURAL DISASTER” DEVELOPED BY PROSPECTIVE CLASSROOM TEACHERS

Abstract

The purpose of this particular study is to examine perceptions of prospective classroom teachers regarding the concept of natural disaster through metaphors. The study was done with 121 prospective classroom teachers, 78 females and 43 males, who were being educated in the 2017-2018 academic year. In the study was employed phenomenological design, one of the qualitative research methods, which allows in depth examination of how the concept of natural disaster is perceived. Opinions and thoughts of the study group about the concept were collected by means of an interview form which contains incomplete sentences, such as “Natural disaster resembles/is like………, because………” Content analysis technique was used for analyzing the data. According to the findings obtained from the study, the prospective teachers came up with 56 valid metaphors about the concept of natural disaster. Those metaphors were gathered in nine different categories depending on their common characteristics (n=9). The result of the study reveals that the metaphors regarding natural disaster fall mostly in the category of “damaging and destroying.” Besides, the most preferred metaphors by the participants were destruction, disaster, death and human.
