The challenges of “a more fluid universe” in Giorgio Fontana’s work

Abstract

Giorgio Fontana has repeatedly taken a look at the transformations of Milan’s external space, including the changes in the city’s cultural identity. Documentary attention is paid to these changes in Babele 56. Eight stops in the changing city (2008) while literary in the short novel. Upper law (2011). In both texts, and in the ways required by their respective genders, the massive presence of migrants in the Italian environment leads to a review not only of the identity coordinates of the places, but also of paradigms of thought, conviction and lifestyles. Contact with a multitude of people from different ethnicities, who often live under the sign of mobility and precariousness, would reveal the fragility of what is often thought to be irremovable in a specific culture: in the novel of 2011, it was the faith in the law itself that called for further reflection.
