Three Steps in Knowing Gizella Cipola’s Performing Style

Abstract

The relevance of the article consists of the comprehension of achievements of national art of singing of the 20th century. The aim of the article is to define the individual music performance by Ukrainian artists, in particular by GizellaCipola. Her significant achievement of European vocal culture is particularly necessary. Research methodology. The study is based on the system of methodological frameworks, suggested by O. P. Katrych: the comprehension of musician’s individual style is analyzed from the perspective of the interconnection and interdependence between a composer and music performing art. The achievements of the theory of the composer’s style and the theory and history of music performance, including the regulations on the generality of laws of artistic thinking, developed in the scientific theory of related arts, are respectively used. Results. The analysis of the performance interpretation of the opera part “Butterfly” by GizellaCipola has demonstrated that her performance thinking was totally influenced and developed by G. Puccini’s style. The center of the system of means of music expressiveness by GizellaCipola in the opera part “Butterfly” is the comprehension of the specific character of Japanese mentality and Japanese cultural tradition. In the interpretation of the opera part “Butterfly” the artist relies on her feeling of the internal psychological state of the heroine. Tempo-rhythm, performance voicing and performance articulation have become the signs of the presentation in the performance. The specific character of performance voicing combines music voicing of the composer text by European author and body mobility (poses, movements, motions as features of Japanese one). Its interpretation embodies a typical nature of Japanese sentence structure, a moderation of movements, the specificity of poses, which are the features of psychological “style” (according toCarl Gustav Jung) as an expression of inner, introversion. Novelty. The category “artistic discovery” (L. Mazel) was applied in analyzing the performance interpretation of the opera part. An attempt is made at identifying the specificity of the individual style of the performing musician-interpreter — the combination of incongruous things: the deep reflection and feeling of Japanese culture (intonational and plastic articulation, psychologically credible speech and emotional detection of Japanese mentality, the harmony of the role of tempo-rhythm) on the one hand, and the brilliant professional “Butterfly” typification in Italian opera as the creation of European vocal culture on the other hand. The practical significance. The applied analytical procedure of GizellaCipola’s performance style as exemplified in the interpretation of Butterfly part can contribute to the analysis of performance style of other major opera artists.
