Fair Trade: an alternative for local development? Air trade, an alternative of local development?

Abstract

The product of different alternative trade initiatives, Fair Trade can be defined as a type of partnership that seeks lasting development for excluded or severely disadvantaged producers, an objective which it aims to achieve by offering better trading conditions to producers and giving guidance to consumers. Over the past two decades, this type of trade has been steadily growing in industrialised countries. This has shown different conceptions and strategies for their progress and sparked questions about the impact of their practices and their ability to represent a real sustainable and equitable local development alternative. This article briefly reviews the history of Fair Trade, introduces a discussion on its relationship with local development and the social economy, and presents concrete examples of this commercial alternative from both producers and consumers.Resulting from different alternative trade initiatives, “fair trade” may be defined as a type of partnership that holders sustainable development for excluded producers or with major advances. It seekers to achieve this objective by proposing better commercial conditions to farmers and Educating consumers.
