CULTURAL DIMENSIONS OF URBAN MOBILITY

Abstract

Urban mobility, particularly that developed on a daily basis by the inhabitants of the city, is a problem of increasing and increasing importance both for the functioning of the urban system and for the development of social life. Although it has been the subject of reflection since the past, it is on the basis of the consolidation of the global city’s paradigm and its ever-increasing expansion into networks and flows that its importance calls into question the very shaping of urban areas, giving rise to new questions about its traditional approaches to understanding. This is particularly important for social sciences, as they face the challenge of broadening their understanding of their socio-cultural dimensions. From this perspective, this work sets out three approaches to addressing urban mobility from the social sciences. The first seeks to give an account of its relevance as the subject matter of the study. The second is aimed at delineating a socio-cultural perspective. Finally, the third approach raises a number of questions that could imply future lines of research into its development.
