Energy analysis of the environmental sustainability of the municipality of Palmyra (Colombia)

Abstract

The growing global urban population increases the demand for natural resources to sustain the quality of life of the human population, this leads to negative impacts on natural ecosystems and the survival of species to maintain environmental services. For this reason, it is necessary to measure the status of cities as ecological systems, in order to prioritise environmental management in line with sustainable development. To this end, there are creative valuation methodologies, based on the value of money, which excludes the work of nature to provide environmental services that promote environmental sustainability. This study investigated models that allow for environmental accounting, integrating natural and urban ecosystems, with the most novel proposal, based on the concepts of thermodynamics, in the emerging synthesis. It took the municipality of Palmyra, defined as Tecnoecosystem, as the study area, applying a five-step methodology, based on the method of emergetic synthesis. Calculating the Emerging Production Index – EYR with 1,46, Environmental Load Index – ELR with 3,2 and Environmental Sustainability Index – ESI with 0,46. The analysis indicates that environmental sustainability and the generation of real wealth are limited by current land use, and can be improved by making better use of this resource, this would be cross-cutting management. In addition, Tecnoecosystem is subject to the social metabolism of the city of Cali, therefore the demand for imported goods and urban land use will increase, reinforcing the need for environmental policy management and proposing the municipality as an Emergency City.
