“Near the sky... in a spacecraft”: devotional reform and religious tourism in the Santuário do Lima (Patu-RN, 1936-1979)

Abstract

The Santuário do Lima is the oldest centre of Romia in Rio Grande do Norte. Edited on 29 January 1758, the small Ermida devoked to Our Madam of the impossibility, on the top of the Serra do Lima in PATU, has become an important point of convergence of roses. From 1921, the sanctuary was handed over to the Missionaries of Sagrada Familia from the Netherlands, who took responsibility for restructuring the sanctuary and guiding the devotional practices. The purpose of this article is to understand the actions of devotional retirement and the practices of the Santuário do Lima as an attractive tourist attraction. On the basis of the records published in Catholic and lay newspapers, an analysis of the construction of representations on religious space was carried out within the Diocese de Mossoró and the state public authorities. With this, we understand the confluence between the guidelines of the devotional practices of the popular layers and the building of an imagery discourse as attractive to tourists and rosters.
