Paradigms of the study of religion: contributions from Jean Greisch

Abstract

There are many approaches to religious phenomosis that have emerged over the last two centuries. Some use methods developed by the humanities, mainly historiography, sociology, ethnology/anthropology, psychology and phenomenology. Others treat religion from a philosophical perspective, as can be seen from the large authors who, especially since the 19th century, have devoted themselves to shaping a philosophy of religion. In recent decades, with the renewal of hermenetic philosophy, new readings of religion have emerged and have profoundly renewed this field of knowledge. The text proposed here presents some elements of the great overview of Luxembourgish philosopher Jean Greisch, which is not well known in Brazil, but whose contribution to studying religion is original, favouring a hermenetic interpretation of the passage. After a brief presentation of his work on the philosophy of religion, the five ‘paradigms’ of his religious studies will be presented: speculative, critic, phenomenological, analytical and hermential, the last one followed by the author himself.
