Abstract
The ultimate reason that popular culture recognises as an explanation for the Tragedia de Armero is Destination. In the many ways Destination takes to manifest itself in the history of northern Tolima, this article explores the notion of burial in its polysemia and analytical depth. By examining the relationship between living and dead, the materiality of the witchery and the stories of guach, the text reaches two main conclusions: firstly, the concept of Guaca is a spatio-temporal concept that makes it possible to understand the cosmology of the centre of Colombia; secondly, in that cosmology, the south-death relationship tells the persistence of a set of ideas and practices relating to the fate of Armero alone, ahead of 23.000 deaths, completely unveiled.
