Abstract
The purpose of this article is to discuss, through theoretical reflection, the potential of a more comprehensive lexical approach and the use of dictionaries in Portuguese language teaching as a Host Language (PLA), with a focus on the Brazilian context, in view of the importance of Portuguese learning in the process of integration and interaction for people in refuge in Brazil. With the arrival of immigrants and refugees, new theoretical and practical knowledge is needed for the teaching of PLA and should be linked with other approaches, taking into account the needs of apprentices. It is concluded that lexicographic works can be potential collaborating tools in the training of the foreign-language apprentice and works of great importance to understand and take ownership of the way in which the language is organised, as well as contributing to the continuous development of the language and culture of the host country. In addition, the approach can collaborate on the desired emancipatory character in PLA education and the empowerment of minority groups.
