ESCO tourism case – international integrator projects to train professionals and citizens, improve access to learning opportunities and foster the taste of knowledge outside school walls

Abstract

There is a growing mismatch between traditional ways of teaching at school and the complex, uncertain, demanding and unpredictable challenges of contemporary society. Committed and competent education professionals are needed to bring about, accompany, stimulate and guide the learning of all and individual citizens throughout their lives (Pérez GOMÉZ, 2010). In addition to knowing the subject to be taught, the education professional has the following competences: know, function, power and reflexivity (Roldão, 2009, pp. 46-48); and as characteristics: have a passion for teaching (Day, 2004)), like to help learn, know how today’s students learn and how they want to learn (Michel Serres, 2012) in today’s Industry 4.0 society (Schwab, 2017), recognise their multiple intelligences (Gardner, 1983), incorporate educational resources and diverse digital tools into teaching practices (Khan Academy – https://pt-pt.khanacademy.org/-, educational games, Kahoot! ClassDojo, Quizizz...), building differentiated and contextualised strategic education actions in key learning (EA, 2018) and aligned with the descriptors of the competence areas of the Mandatory School Profile (PA, 2017), organising new spaces and times, assessing processes and not just products, providing immediate and intelligent feedback, motivating and accompanying all and especially those who do not want to learn, in an inclusive manner. This article presents a lively and contextualised testimony of how ESCOcola de Serviços e Comércio do Oeste, Torres Vedras, Portugal, works for Integrated Projects, leveraging the experiences of interculturality and international mobility of pupils and teachers, particularly in the last two years with the Netherlands and France.
