Abstract

The WAY JOHN DEWEYS IDEAS ARE USED BY Catholic Authors Abstract The present study analyses the educational speech through six works of Catholic authors published in Brazil between 1930’s and 60’s during a time when the representatives of the Catholicism contested with the Liberals the domain of the educational field. It shows the arguments of the Catholic intellectuals in relation to the new pedagogical purposes and in particular of John Dewey’s philosophical, social and pedagogic principles. It request is to show the strategic speech used by the authors to persuade the Readers to practice the Catholic pedagogy making sure, that way, the dominance of Catholic ideas. This methodology is rhetorical analysis, based on the works of the Chaïm Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca, Traité de L’Argumentation, and Stephen Toulmin, The uses of arguments. John Dewey IN THE ARGUMENTATION OF CATÓLICOL AUTHORS Summary The present study analyses the educational narrative conveyed by six Catholic authors’ works published in Brazil between 1930 and 1960, when representatives of Catholic thought challenged the command of the educational field with liberals. The authors’ views on the educational proposals of the New School, and in particular the philosophical, social and pedagogical principles of John Dewey, are presented. The aim is to set out the discursive strategies used by authors to persuade readers and direct them to educational practices that are consonant with the provisions of catolicism, thus ensuring the dominance of Catholic ideas in the social sphere. The methodology is the rhetoric analysis based on the work of Chaïm Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca, Treaty of the argumentation, and Stephen Toulmin, The uses of the argument.
