Elements of sexuality in villages in a rural area of the state Cojedes, Venezuela.

Abstract

Knowledge of sexual and reproductive health issues shows gaps in Latin American countries in terms of reproduction, especially in rural areas and people with lower levels of education. The aim of this research is to describe characteristics of sexuality in rural areas, the first study in Venezuela. Descriptive, cross-sectional and field study, with a questionnaire as an instrument, the sample was 128 individuals from the Apamates community, Cojedes. The average age was 25,3 years, 76.5 % of men and 43.6 % of women were single. 96.1 % of people are able to read and write but only 19.5 % had full baccalaureate. 35.9 % were manual workers and 82.8 % received basic pay. 82 % are aware of contraceptive methods. Condoning and oral contraceptives are mostly used. The prevalence of ITS was low. The majority had between 0 and 1 children. Men on their own initiative are looking for information on sexuality. Knowledge of sexuality in both genders is low. Both genders have sexual relations for love and reproductive purposes. They do not know that it is orgasmo. It concludes that: they do not know basic aspects of sexuality and reproduction; sexuality is a taboo; they know contraceptives but do not use them frequently. Truly effective sexuality education is essential for the development of sexuality.
