Hyjab as a phenomenon of identity design and contestation: example of contemporary New Pazar

Abstract

This work is a reflection and analysis of the relationship between the hijab garment and the female body that can be understood as a field of social relations and combat. The covered body of a Muslim and its meanings can be understood and presented through a number of aspects. The work explains the phenomenon of hijab as a space to design and challenge identity in the example of the city of New Pazar. The issue of banning the wearing of hijab, like other covers of Muslim women – nyb and burka – has been one of the topical issues in many (grained or perceived as) secular democratic societies for many years. Although in the Republic of Serbia this problem was not as current as in many Western Evrope countries, I believe that the anthropological analysis of the use of hijab in New Pazar – which has become a visible and significant element of the sandy cultural mile since the 1990s – is both theoretical and social. By analysing the physicality and physical behaviour of female members of Islamic religion with hijab, taking into account the women’s experience and the personal relationship of girls themselves to the body, ‘covering’ and their identities, gives us an insight into a more physical and intimnia, but also a more versatile perspective.
