Non-memory cinematography. Polish documentary about Litzmannstadt Getto

Abstract

Polish cinema dedicated to Jewish theme is dominated by the topic of Warsaw Getto. Film stories about the ghetto in Łódź (Litzmannstadt Getto) are far from the media famous films about Warsaw ghetto. This situation is linked to the lack of representation of the ghetto tragedy in Łódź in the city itself, not to mention other areas of Poland. The memory of the ghetto is supported by a kind of story that highlights the perspective of those who have saved Jews or survivors; on the other hand, there is no attempt to cast a vote to those who lose their lives. Polish documentaries on ghetto are mostly modest productions, with a narrow distribution range – with the exception of Location 08.1944 – the first documentary in 3D technology in Poland. In order to try to structure them thematically, the following issues would have to be identified as the most common ones: a holistic picture of ghetto, Szper, biographical films and the thread of return to the ghetto. The last one appears in the films of Boris Lankosz and Pavel Štingl, who were interested in the moment of returning to Łódź survivors of Czech origin. Until the 1990s, ghetto documents were characterised by the presence of a narrator from the offu, whose story often dominated the painting. With the appearance of the survivor, he accepts the roles of witness and commentator, which already strengthens a realistic story model and makes it possible to identify with Jewish figures. Audio-visual material registered by German film crews in ghetto in 1940 does not appear in Polish documentary films on ghetto. On the other hand, the ghetto photographs taken by Walter Genewein, Mandel Gross and Henryk Ross are a common source of archive used in the films.
