BETWEEN MODELS AND FIGURES: THE PROBLEM OF TRANSITION IN COMPANIES TAKEN UP BY WORKERS

Abstract

The paper deals with the problem of transition in Companies Assumed by Workers (CAW). Defined as the trajectory from traditional to collective and democratic management, the problem is discussed theoretically with the support of three propositional models built amid the 1970-80‟s intense debate on “alternative organizations”. Three figures of transition are constructed based on these models and proposed as analytical bridges for the better understanding of the transition in case. The analysis allows a typification of CAW as organizations in transition and traces the path by which transition shows up as a problem. The three figures define stages of an open-ended process. In conclusion worker‟s self-management is well represented by the concept of praxis, meaning that it bears the sense of permanent renovation and creation of practices and processes. To think on organizations in transition is to represent them as “states” more than as definite “forms”. Hence, the organizational phenomenon of CAW has reference in a self-managerial praxis. In conclusion, the paper proposes the concept of organization in transition to be expanded to analyze enterprises within solidary economy movement as a whole, since all of them could be apprehended as organizations in permanent construction.
