Archaeological Activity of P.N. Shishkin in the Saratov and Volgograd Regions

Abstract

The article is devoted to the archaeological activity of P.N. Shishkin in the Saratov and Volgograd regions. The researcher has made certain contribution to the study of sites dated from the Stone Age to the Golden Horde epoch. It is known from the Saratov Scientific Archive Board documents that Petr Nikolaevich graduated from the Zwickau engineering school in Germany and conducted archaeological research and excavations in Saratov, Samara, Warsaw and Lublin provinces. He was an active and energetic member of the SSAB, took part in the field research, presented joint archeological reports in public, and collected data for the archaeological map of Saratov province. Since 1918, the scientist had belonged to the Society of History, Archeology and Ethnography at the Saratov University. In the following years, his activity was connected with museology as well. He had been working at the Stalingrad local history museum for many years where he completed archaeological collections, participated in archaeological mapping, led expeditions and looked for the archaeological sites. Apparently, P.N. Shishkin was killed in 1942 while evacuating collections from the Stalingrad museum. Publications of N.P. Shishkin and the results of his work in the field of archaeology of the Lower Volga Region are interesting not just for historiography, but they are still topical and widely used by specialists.
