BETWEEN ‘COMMOTION’ AND ‘RAZIOCINIUM’ THE REMARKS ON PIETRO BORI’S TORTURE

Abstract

Pietro Verri made special remarks on torture to join ‘commotion’ and ‘raziocinium’ in denouncing the abuses of judges in the trial of the unbuys in 1630 as a result of the great plague in Milan: a book giving Manzoni the opportunity for the history of the infame column. ‘Commotion’, linked to the reading of the case file, ‘raziocinium’, referring to the clear-cut analysis of the facts that can be inferred from that reading. These elements seek to illustrate some of the linguistic aspects, which relate to a prosa that is free of traditional eloquency, characterised by a loose style, alternating with a broken and paratactic syntax, ‘franesising’, in the description of the facts, and a more complex one in the arguments: a ductile language for a strong writing dictated by an understanding of justice based on the values of humanity and respect for humans. Between “commotion” and “reason”. The Observations on Torture by Pietro Verri The work by Pietro Verri Comments on torture remarkably combined ‘eMotion’ and ‘reason’ in reporting abuse by the judges in the trial against the plague-spreaders that took place in 1630 following the great plague in the Milan area. It is a book that provided Manzoni with the unity for the history of the infame column. What ‘eMotion’ is related to the reading of the trial records, ‘reason’ reports to the clear analysis of the facts that can be removed from that reading. An attempt is made to illustrate some of the linguistic aspects of these components, attribute to a prose free from forms of traditional eloquence, attributed by a Fluent style, which alternates a broken and paratactic French-styled syntax in description of facts with a more complex one in the argumentative parts, resulting in a flexible language for incisive writing dictated by a design of justice based on the values of humanity and respect for man.
