Abstract

The aim of this article was to analyse some of the main forestry promotion programmes of Brazilian private sector companies and to carry out a technical study of the social, economic and environmental aspects of these programmes. To this end, a qualitative literature survey was carried out, which sought to analyse four different models of private forestry promotion programmes. For the collection of data, programme documents from Aracruz Celulose S.A., Masisa do Brasil Ltda, Industries Klabin de Papel and Celulose S.A. and Ripasa S.A. Celulose e Papel were used. The documents assessed were charts, manuals and contract models, in printed and electronic format, obtained on company websites or directly with those responsible for the programmes, by means of electronic correspondence. On the basis of the documents, some socio-economical aspects of these programmes were described, such as occupation of western land, restoration of degraded areas, diversification of productive activities, reduction of pressure on natural forests, restoration and maintenance of permanent conservation areas and legal reserve, development of forest-industry clusters, guarantee of supply of raw materials, alternative and additional rent generation, direct and indirect jobs, taxes, dissemination of state-of-the-art technology, environmental monitoring, increased forest cover, and environmental benefits such as soil protection, raincycle regulation, carbon sequestration and phase-out refuge.
