La fortificación medieval en el Campo de Montiel (ss. VIII-XVI). Análisis de su secuencia histórica y constructiva =The Medieval Fortification in the Campo de Montiel (Eighth to Sixteenth Centuries). An Analysis of its Historical and Constructive Sequence

Abstract

Campo de Montiel (Ciudad Real) is a historical area located in a neighbouring area between Manchegas lands and Alta Andalucía. There is a considerable density of medieval times’ fortifications in this area, in which, to date, no overall study had been carried out to identify its evolving sequence. Our research is based on the stratigraphic study of the walls of these buildings, combining it with other archaeological methods such as a diverse scale survey and the support of documentary sources for the periods when it is possible. In this work, we presented the first results of our investigation that enabled us to document the various phases of the military sites, which helps us to identify their functions at any given moment, allowing us to reconstruct the historical dynamics of this area and its relationship with adjacent territories, bringing it into line with the major historical processes of the Middle Ages. The Campo de Montiel (Ciudad Real) is a historical location in a border region between La Mancha and the northern part of Andalusia. In this area there is a considerable number of medieval fortifications which to date have not been studied as a whole in order to identify their evolution. Our research is based on a stratigraphic study of the walls of these buildings, combined with other Archaeological methods such as prospection at different scales and the support of documentary sources for certain periods when possible. In this article, we present the first results of our research which have been allowed to document the different features of construction of the military buildings. This has grown us identifying the purpose of these buildings at each moment, allowing us to reconstruct the historical dynamics of this area and its relationship to adjacent territories, linking them with the main storical Currents of the Middle Ages.
