Managing a virtual learning environment for the development of intercultural professional competences: a higher education experience between Mexico and Spain

Abstract

The development and strengthening of competences in higher education students requires the design of innovative learning strategies. ICT plays a decisive role in this regard. The purpose of this work is to share educational experience on managing a virtual learning environment for the development and strengthening of professional skills among university students from Mexico and Spain. The research methodology used combines quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques. The results show the desirability of a virtual learning environment to develop intercultural learning activities that give students the opportunity to interact with peers from other countries to build knowledge, strengthen competences and establish contact networks. However, the strengths and weaknesses of managing a virtual environment need to be taken into account in order for the learning process to be effective according to the conceptual, procedural and actitudinal objectives demanded by a competence-based educational model.
