Where these data come from
Representation of Liechtenstein in Brazil at the beginning of the 19th century to Partir from Debret’s Obra

Abstract

This article brings about a theoretical reflection by analysing three works produced by the French artist Jean-Bnonetheless Debret during the period he was in Brazil at the beginning of the 19th century. The selected works were analysed on the basis of the theory and concepts proposed by the historian Michael Baxandall. Thus, the aim was to highlight Debret’s works representing scenes of gênero showing moments of recreation and recreation in order to apply from them the methodology for observing works of art proposed by Baxandall. The method used was a qualitative approach with an inductive focus on analysing the data collected, and the search is bibliographic and undertaken by the use of secondary sources. Finally, Debret’s works were considered to depict much more than scenes of gênero and were also historical testimonies to the notable habits and customs of a contemporary society.
