Assessment of the acuracity of information on health sites: methods for constructing evidence-based indicators

Abstract

The problem of the quality of health information on the internet has been it has been pointed out over the last two decades. To deal with this problem, the evaluation of sites carried out by professionals, researchers and institutions have whether configured as a new search and action field. One of the main questions in that field are related to the evaluation criteria. Acuracity is the most used criterion, but we identify a problem in its definition and enforcement: to accept consensus among specialists as a quality parameter. In the meantime, consensus does not guarantee a current and correct outcome. In this article, we present and discuss methods driven by medicine based on evidence for the construction of acuracity indicators. The set of methods developed consists of seven steps: search strategy, selection of source of evidence-based information, collection and selection of topics, development the first version of indicators, analyses of groups, topics and indicators. Our methods ensure the development of indicators of according to the best and current scientific evidence. They resolved the problem of acuracity criterion for the quality assessment field of the information on health sites and made it possible to propose a new one definition. The results of this search fill gaps in the knowledge of the field and guide future research and actions as they are replicable for any health topic.
