Abstract
The main political and electoral elements converging in the recent failures of Alianza Popular (PA), the leading right-wing party in Spain, were examined. It describes the evolution of PA, from the confusion of conservative groups at the end of Franco’s dictatorship to becoming the main opposition party. Election results and surveys of popular perceptions about parties and their political leaders relate to voter groups. Among the factors considered to contribute to the weakness of Spanish conservatism is the failure to equate itself with European peers by not reviewing its anti-democratic and authoritarian image ideology.
