The artist’s stance towards urban art museums in the Latin American context

Abstract

When the term “museum” is used, it is assumed that it is a place whose aim is to preserve, research and disseminate the cultural heritage representative of a society. It is therefore understood that the museum’s role is positive. On the contrary, when we speak of “urban art museums”, perceptions of their nature are very different, both by artists and audiences. A priori, there is criticism of the significance of its existence, as well as its mission, vision, function of this type of space and the effect it will have on artistic creation itself. Since the management of museum spaces focused and carried out by former teachers to expose, disseminate, research and even preserve urban art, various positions have emerged in this regard, as limiting urban interventions in the museum context is apparently at odds with the very sense of urban art, often transgressive, which calls for public space throughout the word. However, its inclusion in these environments opens up new possibilities for the perception of its artistic forms and shows a new assessment of them in new contexts. This article focuses on the evolution of public art in Latin America and its handover to museums. In addition, the artists’ vision of the creation of urban art museums will be presented, using the interview system.
