Abstract
The analysis of Milet I 3.33, a decree adopted by the Mileto Assembly in 234/233 BC, which confers citizenship on many individuals, who are identifiable as cretenses mercenaries recruited by the city, demonstrates the political role of the Apolo spelt in Dídima in the helenthetic era. The procedure, which is closely linked to Mileto, is not only an instrument used by the city of Jonia to establish relations with the helenthetic sovereigns, especially the Greens, but is also sometimes an instrument involved in the decision-making process which marks Mileto’s regional policy and, at the same time, an authority capable of steering polis decisions, where the citizens’ concordia is risky. The analysis of Milet I 3.33. decree of the Milesian commencing citizenship to Cretan migrants, probably mercenaries, shows the political role of the oracle of Apollo at didyma during the Hellenistic period. The oracle, closely linked to Miletos, is in fact useful in establishing and maintaining relations between the Ionian city and the Hellenistic dynasties, specially the Seleucids, but reflects at the same time the Milesian need to extend her influence in the neighbouring area, subordinmes dealing with potentially complex civic matters.
