Technological skills and new job profiles: challenges of current journalism

Abstract

The aim of this work is to find out how the intersections of technology with traditional practice occur in some of the journalistic currents that make the most use of the new tools: multimedia journalism, immersive journalism and data journalism. The great dilemma of journalism in the preparation of professionals (especially young people) is not so much about incorporating technologies and he-rams, but also improving their skills and abilities with a profile that exploits the opportunities of the computational model while maintaining the journalistic essence. The objective is twofold: answer questions about which tools professionals use to produce journalistic pieces with these techniques and what technological knowledge and skills were not needed for 20th century journalism but were necessary for 21st century journalism. Based on the review of reports from professional and/or insti-tute organisations of international relevance, an exploratory investigation into the work of 25 European and American journalists was designed, and three study cases were chosen to conclude that the technology matrix will not disappear but can be increased because the process of change and technology is not going backwards and requires to evolve and adapt to new dynamics of work in multi-discipli-nares teams where dialogue between journalists and technologists needs to be smooth. Different perspectives feed the dual avenue of competences and skills in the profiles of the current technologist journalist perceived by professors to demand the current ecosystem.
