The power of faith, the miracle of power: evangelical mediators and social border-shifting

Abstract

On the basis of two case studies, I will analyse in this article the combination of two trends in the pentecostal evanal universe: that of the world’s flat life and that centred on the miracle and the role played by divorces. The articulation between them forms a whole, the various integration of which is nowadays the evangelical presence in the public sphere. As a whole, evangelical churches reconstructed religious boundaries into ‘inside’ and ‘outside’. For ‘inside’ they redefined magia and religion by moving the world’s encantement, conventionally maintained as magic, through catholicism, into religion as a miracle. ‘Out’ the evangélics have adopted a form of sacralisation of their agents and tools in their practices and speeches. The divorced aura has moved to the many social fields, which in turn provide the raw material needed to forge the protagonist of their pastory.Based upon two cases studies this paper is an Attempt to analyse the articulation between two tendancies in the pentacostal evangeslist Universe: life separated from the world and life centred on miracle and divorine protagonism. The articulation in between these two tendancies constitute a whole: the moving integration of it present in the life of the evangelical presence in the public sphere. As a whole, the evangelist churches are reconstructing the frontiers of what religious is, ‘inside’ and ‘outside’. “Inside” they are redefining magic and religious, displacing the world Enchantment, usualy maintained as “magical” by catholicism, inside the proper religious sphere as miracle. “Outside”, the evangelists maintain through their Discourses and practical life a way to sacrament their agents and instruments. A divorine aura seems to invade the various and necessary social strengths that have to be established their pastoralism’s leadership.
