The mediation of information at the Paraíba Abrigo House: the role of women in facing domestic violence

Abstract

Objective research to check how the mediation of information at the Paraíba Abrigo House has fostered women’s role in breaking the situation of domestic violence. As regards the methodology, the study is descriptive, with a qualitative approach, for the development of which the case study was used as a strategy. The search field was the Paraíba Brigo House and the interlocutors were women who joined the organ. In the collection, the in-depth interview was conducted with women who were deprived of their liberty and who needed shelter to keep alive. The data were analysed using the content analysis. The results show that the House Abrigo da Paraíba is a critical space of dialogy, creativity and alterity, in which the mediation of information is conscious and constant in order to retarget the violence experienced by women hosted in the House. It is noted that the mediation of information content promoted by the Paraíba Abrigo House has contributed to the development of women’s role, having an impact on perceptions of domestic violence and breaking the cycle of violence. As regards the role played by women, this could be seen in the resistance and struggle to break the situation of violence since they sought help and were directed to the organ. It is concluded by considering that knowingly mediated information can be one of the ways of changing mindsets and reversing the various problems in our society, which is still governed by malism, racism and social inequality.
