Abstract
El The purpose of this article is femicide considered to be a gender-based crime. Provides a feminist analysis of the conceptual dimensions of the criminal type; it includes the main arguments explored in Latin America, examines different aspects defended by feminist and women movement activists, takes into account some reactions triggered by criminalisation and considers the general structure of the crime as approved in six countries: Costa Rica (special law, 2007), Guatemala (special law, 2008), Mexico (general law, 2007), El Salvador (special and comprehensive law, 2010), Colombia and Chile (reforms of the criminal code, 2008 and 2010). This study is very important because criminal cases, as well as generating different debates at judicial and legislative level, have opened up new avenues for further critical investigation of this extreme expression of gender-based violence targeting women’s bodies and undermining the right to live a life free from violence.
